Masterpiece Monday | The Treachery of Images

I feel kinda bad presenting this painting, as it seems to have become a cliche; a cheap attempt at expressing a shallow sentiment.

But maybe that's the point. Maybe this painting has become more than it originally was, and has achieved it by becoming less.

The title says it all: images are lies. They purport to be something they are not. The paint and canvas that make up this painting is not a pipe.

But now you have an image (this painting) that is everywhere. I have seen it so many times I've begun to wonder: if the image is treacherous, how treacherous is the popular idea implied in connection with the image?
