I posted a lot of pictures of this in-process on
Facebook,
Instagram, and
Tumblr, but I wanted to put them all together in one place now that the project is complete.
The project was a commission to paint an 8' by 5' image of St. Vincent de Paul based on a stained glass window in a church in Chicago. I took some liberties with the source image, changing up the faces a little, and simplifying the background.
From start to finish it took about 9 days to stretch the canvas (the school maintenance man made the stretcher frame, he did an amazing job!), transfer the image, and paint it. It could have gone a little faster if I didn't layer as much, but I really like the effect.
I would like to thank coffee, procrastination and working at the last minute for helping me finish this project on time [-:
[CATHOLIC WARNING!!!]
I also need to thank the Blessed Virgin Mary, there were so many times I was on the verge of a panic attack, and she pulled me back from the edge.
Here's the process, from beginning to end:
Step#1 Turning the original into a line drawing |
Step#2 Transferring the line drawing to the canvas |
Step#3 Beginning the flesh tones |
Step#4 Flesh tones are finished! |
Step#5 Beginning the clothing |
Step#6 Still working on the clothing... |
Step#7 Clothing finished! Background begun |
Step#8 Background finished! Filling in the iron |
FINISHED!!!! And there was much rejoicing!!! |
