I am very interested in Medieval heraldry. I like how heraldry can be complicated as well as simple at the same time, complicated in that there is a lot going on visually, yet the forms and figures themselves are simple.
That is the idea behind this painting. I wanted to capture some of the beauty of medieval heraldry in a modern way.
The fleur-de-lis is painted simply, the emphasis on taking it in as a whole rather than a collection of parts. The background is a muted whirlwind of color.
